Representative Institutions
Overview
Parliament gets invented during these centuries, and not only in
England. Initially, these assemblies were called by the monarch in order
to gain support for some undertaking. Later, the assemblies claimed the
right to air grievances before voting the king his money. Eventually,
they began to legislate on their own authority.
In the Renaissance, the assemblies remained distinctly junior to the
king, assembling only at royal request and considering only the issues he
laid before them.
