Four Year Undergraduate Violin Progression (Levels)

This list of technical accomplishment and literature is assembled to indicate the minimum goals to be reached for each level of competency in the undergraduate string program. All freshmen or transfer students shall be auditioned in the previous spring or during registration week to determine the appropriate level for which to enroll.

Technique:

3 octave major scales (4 sharps-4 flats), slur 2, 4, per bow
3 octave arpeggios for each of the scales, slur 3 per bow

Mazas Bk. I or Kreutzer 42 Studies (early portion of book)
Objectives: student should be comfortable in 3rd and 5th position, 2nd position studies if needed. Facile bowing and mastery of the following strokes: detache, martele, spiccato, smooth legato.

3 octave scales, Major (4 sharps-4 flats) Minor, g, a, b, c, d, e, slur 2,4, 8 per bow
3 octave arpeggio sequence with diminished and dom.7th added, slur 6 and 8

Kreutzer: middle etudes
Objectives: student is competent in 1st -7th position.Continued work on facile bowing. Emphasize smooth shifting.
Start to identify one's own goals by better hearing of one's own needs.

All 3 octave major and minor scales, slur 4,6,8,12 per bow
3 octave arpeggio sequence
Sevcik Op. 1, Pt. 4 Double Stops: 3rds, 6ths, and octaves through 3rd position
Bowings: sautille and other specialty bowings
Kreutzer: late etudes
Objectives: Make significant progress in ability to hear phrasing and use appropriate bow techniques.

3 octave scales: all major and minor, up to 24 per bow
3 octave arpeggios: all major and minor, 9 and 12 per bow
Double Stops: 3rds, 6ths, octaves, through 5th position
Rode, Dont, Paganini Etudes
Objectives: To make the "complete" violinist. Advanced technique and musicianship
