The purpose of string lessons is to follow an individualized course of musical study which will:

1. facilitate technical improvements on your instrument

2. provide exposure to standard violin repertory

3. challenge each individual to grow as a musician

4. provide ample preparation for appropriate performance

    opportunities.

Lessons: Please bring to each lesson all of your music plus a lesson notebook for lesson assignments. Should you have questions during the week on a particular problem related to your instrument, it is wise to make a note of it in this notebook. This will save us time in our lessons together. You should listen to recordings of all pieces you are currently working on. Listening should be an aid to helping you develop your own interpretation of a work.

Lessons are NOT to be missed. It is very difficult for me to reschedule lessons. If you must miss a lesson, please let me know as much ahead as possible. Unacceptable excuses include doctor's appointments (except emergencies) and other school activities, etc, unless I have a note from another faculty member.

Practicing: Practicing must be scheduled every day. Here are some guidelines for minimums:

1 hr. per day-non music majors

1 1/2--3 hrs per day, 7 days a week- music education, music general, and music business majors, 2 credits

3-4 hrs per day minimum, 7 days a week-music performance majors, 4 credits

Please be prepared in lessons to tell me what your practice schedule has been and what specifically you have accomplished during the week. I am goal oriented and will be more than happy to "map" out a course of action with each of you.

Studio Class: Class consists of both lessons and evening studio classes. Once per three weeks or so we will have evening studio class, usually Tues, Weds, or Thurs. to involve non majors. These will be performance classes. Attendance will be taken and your semester grade will be based partially on your participation and attendance at these classes. I will now post studio class times, lesson times, etc. at the beginning of the semester on my door and on the web. (Mr. Purdy's Violin Studio Calendar, http://ical.mac.com/craigpurdy/Violin%20Studio) It is also important to check your BSU e-mail accounts every few days for updates and news of important concerts, masterclasses, etc.

Performances: Please let me know of all performances, auditions, etc. you may be partaking in so we can make best use of our lesson time together. I enjoy hearing each of you perform and will make make every attempt to come hear you play in any outside concerts you might be involved in.

Concerts: As evidenced by the concert requirements for music majors, it is very important to hear other musicians perform, particularly other string players. Therefore, I expect to see all of you at string concerts/recitals and masterclasses here at BSU. (recitals by your colleagues, faculty or guest chamber music recitals, Boise Philharmonic, etc.) As with studio class I will require attendance at a certain number of these events. I will talk more about this in studio class.

Grading: Final grade will reflect weekly lesson preparation (see other side), progress in practice techniques, contribution and performance in studio class, attendance at concerts, and, if you are a string major, jury performance.
