Repertoire Rules

Each quartet must prepare two contrasting movements from the standard literature of the string quartet. Contrasting is defined by the following major style periods:

  • Viennese Classical, up to and including Beethoven and Schubert
  • 19th Century Romantic, through about 1900
  • 20th Century, typically composed after 1910

The total competition performance time for both movements together is limited to 20 minutes. Selections may exceed the time limit, but performances may be stopped at ten minutes for each movement by the judges during the live competition.
